How to Sew a Daisy Stitch in Needlepoint

Learn the daisy stitch and you will be well on your way to creating beautiful embroidered artwork. The daisy stitch, also known as the detached chain stitch or the lazy daisy stitch, produces a small loop. You can arrange these loops in a circle to create a small flower or scatter them across your needlepoint to create different designs. After you learn the stitch, you can create double- or triple-thick loops to add texture to your design.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate your embroidery hoop. Drape the fabric over the inner circle of the hoop and smooth it out. Place the outer hoop over top and tighten. Pull the fabric taut, tightening the hoop as you go, until it is as tight and smooth as a drum.

    • 2

Thread your needle and knot the thread at the opposite end.

    • 3

Push the needle up through the fabric. Pull the thread over to the left and hold in place with your left hand.

    • 4

Pull your needle down through fabric in the same spot you came up. The thread should form a large loop. Push the needle back up through the fabric, a few millimeters from where you went back in. Make sure the needle comes back up inside the large loop of thread. Pull the thread tightly to form a small loop against the fabric.

    • 5

Move your needle over the loop and push it back down through the fabric. Doing so creates a stitch that holds the loop in place.

    • 6

Push the needle back up through the fabric in the place you began. Repeat the steps above, forming another loop next to the first one. Continue on until you have stitched a small flower.
