Flaxseeds have been consumed since the early days of civilization and are considered to be highly nutritious due to their high fatty acid, vitamin, mineral and protein content. They are also high in the photonutrient lignin, which may have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Flaxseeds can be purchased at most grocery stores or natural health food stores. Whole flaxseeds can be ground in a small food processor and then added to food or drink as a health supplement.

      Purchase whole flaxseeds, as split flaxseeds may have fewer nutrients. Note that whole flaxseeds can be stored in an airtight container for up to a year. Split or preground flaxseed may spoil easily.

      Make sure the blade is inserted into the bowl on the food processor and pushed into position prior to adding the flaxseeds. Once the blade is in place, add 4 tbsp. of whole flaxseeds in the bowl; this amount provides approximately 6g of protein and 8g of fiber.

      Set the lid on top of the bowl and turn until it clicks into place.

      Use the "Pulse" button on the food processor to activate the blade until the flaxseeds have been chopped to a fine-grain consistency.

      Sprinkle the ground flaxseeds on yogurt, cereal or granola or add to smoothies, juice or cookie, cake or bread batter. Store the ground flaxseeds in an airtight container and use within one week.
