Make your own book marker so you don't lose your place again.

One of the most frustrating things a reader faces is opening a book to find that she has lost her place. Folding book pages down is unacceptable to many readers because it leaves a noticeable crease. A book marker is an item that will help you keep track of what you read. You don't need to invest in an expensive book marker. Use your creativity to make your own design that reflects your personality.

Instructions

  1. On the Computer

    • 1

Open the Paint program on your computer. Click on the rectangle located in the "Shapes" box. Find the area to change the line size and select how thick or thin you would like the lines for the outline of your book marker.

    • 2

Draw a rectangle. Holding the left button of your mouse down, drag it across the screen until the rectangle is the size you want for your book marker. If you are unhappy with the size, click the "Undo" button.

    • 3

Decorate your book marker. If you want to change the color of the rectangle, select the paint bucket and the hue you like. Click inside of the rectangle. Add words to your book marker by choosing the "Text" box--the icon that resembles the letter "A"--and positioning the box in your book marker. Insert clip art and pictures. Click "Paste," and locate images from your picture gallery. Resize the image with your mouse and drag it into your book marker.

    • 4

Print your design. Laminate the book marker if you have access to a laminating machine. Cut out your design for immediate use.

    By Hand

    • 5

Use a ruler to trace a rectangle on a sheet of blank computer or construction paper. Examine the rectangle to make sure that it is straight. If you need to draw another rectangle, use an empty area of the same sheet of paper.

    • 6

Add designs to the book marker. Cut images from magazines and glue them inside of the rectangle. If you are a good artist, draw a design on your book marker with markers or colored pencils or use stencils to trace patterns. Experiment with calligraphy or an interesting font on another piece of paper then try it on your book marker.

Trim away excess paper. If you used markers on your design, let the paper dry. If you want to make several book markers, make copies of your creation. Laminate the book marker.
