Instructions

Cast on 84 stitches. Knit every stitch on every row for eight rows to make a garter stitch brim for your hat.

    • 2

Switch to stockinette stitch for 30 rows. To knit stockinette stitch, follow this pattern: knit one row, purl one row. End with a purled row.

    • 3

Begin to decrease your hat. For the next row, knit 10 stitches, then knit two together and repeat that pattern across the row. Purl the next row. On the third decrease row, knit nine stitches and then two together, and repeat that pattern across. Purl the next row. Continue to decrease in this manner, each time knitting one less individual stitch before the knit two together stitch. Purl all of the rows in between knit decrease rows. On your final decrease row you will knit two stitches together for every stitch in the row.

Finish the top of the hat. Cut your working yarn, leaving a 15-inch tail. Thread this tail onto a large eye blunt needle or an embroidery needle and hook it through all of the stitches left on your needle. Pull the knitting needle out and pull the yarn like a drawstring to close the top of the hat.

Turn the hat inside out (so you can see the bumpy side instead of the smooth stockinette side). Use your large eye blunt needle and yarn tail to sew the sides of the hat together down the seam. Weave in your loose ends then turn the hat right side out and wear it.
