Keep place in your latest novel with a Photoshop bookmark.

Whether you enjoy diving headfirst into a thick, new novel or are reading a number of books all at once, you may find yourself keeping place within your reading material with a scrap of paper, receipt or piece of junk mail. Instead, mix your hobby of reading with a bit of arts and crafts creativity by making your own bookmarks through the Adobe Photoshop graphics software program. Create bookmarks for yourself, family and friends with just a few clicks through some of Photoshop's useful tools, filters and palettes.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and select "File," then click "New." Give the file the name "MyBookmark" and set the "Width" to be 3 inches and the "Height" to be 8 inches. Choose "CMYK Color" from the "Mode" drop-down menu and click the "White" button under "Contents." Then click the "OK" button.

Step 2

Click the "New Layer" icon, which looks like a bent post-it note, on the "Layers" palette on the right side of your screen. A new Layer 1 appears; right-click it and select "Layer Properties," then rename the layer "Image."

Step 3

Click "File," then click "Open" and browse to an area on your computer where you have a photo to use for the bookmark, such as a picture of your pet or child. Double-click it to open it on your workspace. Click "Select," then click "Select All" and press the "Ctrl" and "C" keys on your keyboard.

Step 5

Add a new layer to the "Layers" palette and name it "Text." Click the "Text" tool, which looks like a capital "T" on the "Tools" palette, on the left side of your screen. Note a new toolbar at the top of the screen. Choose a font, color and size, then click the "MyBookmark" box. Your cursor changes to a blinking line; type text such as "My Bookmark" or "I Love Reading."

Step 7

Click the "Background" layer in the "Layers" palette, then click the "Fill" tool on the "Tools" palette, which looks like a tipping paint can. Pull down the "Fill" menu at the top of the screen and choose "Pattern." Then pull down the "Pattern" drop-down menu and select a background for the bookmark. Hover your cursor over the "MyBookmark" box and note that it changes into the paint can; click once and the bookmark fills with the pattern.
