How to Feed Boxer Puppies

How to Feed Boxer Puppies thumbnail
Boxer puppies require high-quality nutrition.

Boxer puppies are playful, intelligent and full of energy, and the food they eat should support those characteristics. Boxer puppies should be fed diets that are filled with high-quality ingredients in food that is either homemade or purchased. A boxer puppy's health can be compromised if it is not fed food that will meet its nutritional needs and stimulate proper growth. Therefore, there are a few rules when feeding your boxer puppy.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Investigate whether a raw or kibble diet will work best for you and your puppy. According to boxerworld.com, many boxer owners feed their dogs the BARF diet, which contains fresh, raw fruits, vegetables and meat. Speak with your puppy's breeder or veterinarian about which type of diet would work best for your particular puppy, because they are all different.

    • 2

Choose a puppy food that is made for large-breed dogs, if feeding commercial food. Feeding your boxer this type of puppy food will help it not to grow too large too fast, which can result in future orthopedic problems.

    • 3

Mix the food you have chosen into the puppy's current diet. Switch your puppy's food gradually, or stomach upset could result. Feed your puppy 25 percent of the new food and 75 percent of the old food for a few days, and if your boxer puppy tolerates this, move on to feeding it a mixture of half new food and half old food. After a few days, feed 75 percent of the new food and 25 percent of the old food, and if the puppy hasn't had diarrhea after a couple of days, place it on the new food, exclusively.

    • 4

Feed your eight- to sixteen-week boxer puppy three to four times daily, suggests boxerdogessentials.com. Feed the amount the bag states or what the vet or breeder recommends. Once the pup reaches 16 weeks of age, only give two meals a day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dry food and treats is often better for a puppy's teeth and it helps to keep him clean.

  • Look for organic and preservative-free food. Boxers are prone to food allergies and feeding food that is free of chemicals and additives can help to avoid the problem.

  • Never feed your boxer puppy chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions or cooked bone, because illness could result.
