Choosing a wedding gown is one of the most exciting and important moments for a bride-to-be. For some, a gown off the rack cannot compare to one that has been designed individually. Designing a bridal gown is a fairly complex task, however. Bridal gowns tend to use delicate fabrics and complicated designs. At the same time, there is convenient online software available that makes designing a bride's wedding gown a matter of a few plans and a little time. Does this Spark an idea?

      Select gowns you like. Go through bridal magazines and surf online wedding gown websites such as Bride Couture, the knot, and Brides.com. Print out or rip out pictures of the gowns that you like, circling or making a note on the picture as to what you like about the gown.

      Choose a style for your wedding dress. Select the style of the dress from options including A-line, empire waist, floor length, short, tea length, mermaid or sheath.

      Pick a style for the dress sleeves. Decide if you want the wedding dress to have short sleeves, long sleeves, cap sleeves, spaghetti straps or be strapless.

      Pick a neckline. After you choose a dress shape/style, then choose a neckline that you think

      Choose accents and design elements. Many bridal dresses have ribbons, pearls, sequins or other accents and design elements sewn on to the dress. Decide which design elements and accent you want to add to your dress.

      Select the online software or sketch out a design of the wedding dress. Use the various design elements you have chosen from magazines and surfing online wedding gown sites to put the wedding gown design together on paper. You can either use online software to create and print out your wedding dress design or draw the design on paper.       Take your design to a seamstress. Print out the dress design you created online or take your dress sketch to a seamstress to discuss having your wedding dress made.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep cost in mind as you design the gown. Wedding gowns are formal gowns and usually include fine fabric and more of it, so be sure to plan for the cost of the overall design as you prepare the gown.

  • If possible, have the bride try on a few sample gowns from bridal gown stores in order to get a sense for which style works best on her.
