How to Stop Internet Pop-Up Ads

Increased control over your computer and its security means less worrying about hijacking attempts and virus infestations. Part of security control when it comes to your computer is stopping pop-up ads from appearing while you surf the Internet. Pop-up advertisements are not only annoying, but can also make your Internet connection seem slow. In addition, some pop-up ads are designed to trick you into downloading malicious spyware and programs, which is why blocking pop-ups is a vital issue to the health of your computer system.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest version of either Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. All three of these Internet browsers contain built-in pop-up blockers. Install the browser on your computer and open it when the installation process is complete.

    • 2

Set the browser's pop-up ad blocker to its highest settings. Click on the "Tool" tab in Internet Explorer and select the "Pop-up Blocker Settings." Select the "High" setting in the Blocking Level drop-down menu to block all Internet pop-up ads.

In Mozilla Firefox, click the "Tools" menu and select "Options." Click the "Content" section and make sure the box that reads "Block pop-up windows" is checked.

Using Google Chrome, choose "Options" from the Tools menu. Click on the "Under the Hood" section. In the Privacy section, choose "Content Settings" and confirm that the "Do not allow" radio button is selected in the "Pop-ups" tab section.

Download and install a free, pop-up blocking software program on your computer. Choose a program such as Ad Muncher, Adblock Plus or Pop-up Stopper that has been reviewed by authoritative sources such as "PC World" and "PC Magazine."

Set the software pop-up blocker to its maximum settings to block all pop-up advertisements. Add websites to the "exceptions" options in the blocker software to allow specific, safe sites from which you want to allow pop-up windows.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be wary of pop-up advertisements that appear as legitimate virus-checking system-scanners or anti-virus programs; these appear legitimate so that you'll download a program, which is often a virus in and of itself.
