How to Install Memory Chips Onto the Memory Board

A desktop random access memory (RAM) module.

Random access memory (RAM) is the circuitry that computers use for second-to-second storage, access and work space to process information and execute programs. This RAM comes in chip form on light, small modules that snap into dedicated slots on the computer's main circuit board, the motherboard. Installation of these modules is fairly easy, and the installation of new RAM is one of the simplest and most effective computer upgrades you can do.

Installing New RAM in a Desktop

1. Decide how much RAM you want to install. Research the specifications of your computer and its motherboard. Know how much RAM is presently installed, and how much more it can accept. It's important to ensure that the type, timing, capacity and form factor (shape) of the RAM are all compatible with your system.

2. Purchase the RAM. Most modern RAM for desktop computers comes in modules called "dual inline memory modules" (DIMM), while laptop/notebook RAM comes in "small outline DIMMs" (SODIMM).

3. Prepare for installation. Unplug your computer's power cord, and disconnect any peripherals (including monitors, printers, etc.). Remove the battery from a laptop or notebook. Next, dissipate any static electricity on your body by touching a large metal object (this is to prevent damage to the RAM). Use an antistatic/grounding strap if available.

4. Open up your system. Many modern desktop computers have cases that slide apart to give access to the internal components. Many laptops and notebooks will need to be at least partially opened up with a screwdriver. Consult your owner's manual to ensure that the opening procedure is done correctly.

5. Locate the RAM slots by checking your owner's manual. When the case is open, they should look like long, thin black or white strips of hard plastic embedded with dozens of small metal contacts and with small holding arms on the side.

6. Orient the RAM modules so that the notches on each module properly match the configuration of the slot and holding arms. Without touching the black chips or the metal contacts, firmly but gently press the module vertically down into the slot. Do NOT force the module in. If it won't go, remove the module, check its orientation and try again. When it's in, snap the holding arms into place on the module.

7. Remove any tools, reassemble the case, plug in and power up. Your system should display onscreen the total amount of installed RAM at start-up or in your operating system.

Installing New RAM in a Laptop

1. Follow Steps 1 through 5 above.

2. Orient the SODIMM to match the notches on the RAM slot. Gently insert the SODIMM into the slot at about a 45-degree angle. When it is properly inserted, push the SODIMM down so that it lies flat and flush with the motherboard. Ensure that the SODIMM is properly held by the side clips.

3. Finish with Step 7 above.

Tips & Warnings

• Always ensure that the computer is disconnected from wall power, battery power, and any peripherals before opening up the case.

• Before opening the case, discharge any static electricity to avoid damage to the RAM and computer circuits.
