How to Take Care of an Applehead Chihuahua

The applehead Chihuahuas are very loyal and protective of their masters.

Applehead Chihuahua is a term used to describe a Chihuahua with an apple-shaped head. They are small dogs that may have long or short hair and come in all colors. Some dogs may have a soft spot called a molera on the top of their head, but this does not affect the purity of the breed. Applehead Chihuahua is a lively breed with lots of attitude. They are clever, sweet and lovable pets who often attach themselves to their owners, making them excellent guard dogs.

Instructions

1. Prepare for your applehead Chihuahua's arrival by buying food and water bowls, a bed and blanket, a small dog harness, a leash, an identification tag and high quality dry dog food.

2. Take your applehead Chihuahua to the veterinarian for vaccinations, flea treatments, heartworm medication and a complete physical.

3. House train your Chihuahua to use a litter box. Applehead Chihuahuas are sensitive to cold weather and may feel cold when you feel warm. For this reason it's ideal for Chihuahuas to use a litter box to avoid exposure to winter temperatures.

4. Feed your applehead Chihuahua three small meals a day. Chihuahuas have tiny stomachs and can only digest small amounts at a time. They digest poultry and brown rice best, and do not digest beef well at all.

5. Take your applehead Chihuahua for a walk at least once a day for 10 to 15 minutes to keep him strong and to prevent obesity. Make sure you use a harness instead of a collar so that you don't hurt his delicate neck.

6. Brush your short-haired applehead Chihuahua once or twice a week. If you have a long-haired Chihuahua brush his hair daily to prevent tangles and matting. Bathe him at least once a month and be careful not to get water in his ears or eyes because this could cause infection. Clip your dog's nails as needed.

7. Train your applehead Chihuahua with lots of praise and positive reinforcement. The Chihuahua breed is notorious for having antisocial behavior, but it is possible to raise a friendly Chihuahua if he's well socialized and trained as a puppy.

8. Take your applehead Chihuahua to the vet for regular checkups. The design of the Chihuahua's eyes and nose makes it susceptible to colds, wheezing and glaucoma.
