How to Pick Locks in "Oblivion" for the PS3

In the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, lock-picking is something you will use throughout the game. Sometimes quests will require you to pick locks to get to the next part of the quest. However, your hero has a higher probability of unlocking doors and chests over time. Your security skill will go up each time you try to pick a lock, and the higher your security skill is the fewer tumblers will fall when you break a lock-pick. Learning how to pick locks will help you get further in the game faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a locked door or chest, preferably with a difficulty level of "Very Easy" or "Easy." The difficulty level will appear under the description of the door or chest when you scroll over it. Press "X" at the door or chest to enter the lock-picking screen. On this screen you will find five tumblers, some up and some down. To successfully pick a lock, you will need to get all five tumblers up. Under the tumblers you will see a lock-pick.

    • 2

Move the thumbstick right to left to change which tumbler the pick is under. Move the lock-pick under the tumbler you want to start with, and press up on the thumbstick to move the tumbler up.

    • 3

Move the tumbler up a few times to gauge how fast the tumbler is falling. Notice the difference in the speed the tumbler falls--it sometimes falls very fast, and sometimes it falls at a steady pace along with the pick. Press "X" when the tumbler is at it's highest point to get the tumbler to stay up. If the tumbler is moving more slowly, it will stay at the top long enough to let you press "X." This should snap the tumbler in place. If it doesn't snap in place, your pick will break. A new pick will be placed into the lock, and you will have to try again.

Do the same for each tumbler that is lowered. If you successfully snap all tumblers into position, you will have picked the lock and have access to whatever the lock was attached to.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can start with any tumbler that is down. If you chose a lock with a difficulty of "Easy" or "Very Easy," only one or two tumblers will come down.

  • If you need more lock-picks, you can find them in chests, boxes, on dead enemies, or you can buy them.

  • You can also use the "Auto-Attempt" feature by pressing "X." This will automatically try to pick the lock, and how successful it is depends on your security level and the difficulty of the lock itself.

  • You can obtain the Skeleton Key, an unbreakable lock-pick, by completing the Nocturnal Daedric Shrine Quest once you reach level 10.
