How to Properly Store a Propane Lantern

Propane lanterns are produced by many manufactures including Coleman and Brunton, and typically cater to the outdoor/camping enthusiast. These lanterns utilize mantels which are small mesh bags that burn white hot as propane is collected. The propane lantern is generally much brighter than a regular battery powered lantern, but does require a different storage method all together. Battery powered lanterns can simply be put up in a closet and forgotten about, whereas a propane lantern requires maintenance and special care for the propane cylinder. Storage of a propane lantern is a universal process regardless of manufacturer, with specific attention to storage of the propane canister. You should always exercise caution when storing a propane lantern.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the lantern and wait for it to cool. As a rule of thumb, wait at least an hour for sufficient cooling prior to storage.

    • 2

Move the lantern at least 10 feet away from any heat, flame or other possible ignition sources. Never attempt to separate the propane bottle from the lantern near a heat source.

    • 3

Unscrew the lantern from the propane bottle. Twist the lantern off of the propane bottle counterclockwise.

    • 4

Place the protective cap onto the propane cylinder's main valve. Place the propane bottle in a cupboard or high on a shelf away from heat, out of reach from children, and in a location where it won't fall. The storage area temperature should not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 5

Wipe away any dust from the globe, and the lantern body. You can clean the mantels by wiping lightly with a soft damp cloth and allow them to dry, however, once mantels are lit and cooled, they become very fragile so use caution when cleaning.

    • 6

Place the lantern in its original box, or put it in a protective bag. Some lantern manufacturers offer protective storage bags--separate from purchase, or you can use a plastic bag to cover the lantern. The idea here is to cover the lantern to prevent bugs, cobwebs, or dust from clogging the lantern feed lines.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your lanterns utilizes mantels, these should be kept separate, and handled with care. Once a mantel has been burned, it is very fragile to the touch, and can be damaged if handled roughly or dropped.

  • It is considered unsafe and in some communities illegal to store, or posses liquid propane cylinders over 1.14 kilograms in occupied enclosures such as living areas.
