1
Use a napkin or paper towel to lightly grease a fondant mat. This will prevent the fondant from sticking. Rub a small amount of fondant on your hands as well. Combine equal amounts of fondant and gum paste by kneading them together with your hands. Use your fingers to pick out any hard pieces in the mixture.

2
Rub shortening onto your rolling pin. Roll the fondant and gum paste mixture out onto the mat until it is very thin, so thin that you can see the decoration of the fondant mat through the fondant.

3
Use cookie cutters to cut out an equal number of large and small flower shapes. Set the cutout flower shapes to the side, and cover them with a towel or wax paper so that they don't dry out as you work.

4
Press the veining tool into each petal of each flower. Start at the bottom of the petal, closest to the center, and slide the veining tool up the petal. This will make them longer and slightly curved. Be gentle, and don't work too quickly, or you will tear the petal.

5
Mix 1/4 tsp. of gum paste with 1 tbsp. of water. This will make a type of edible glue. Use a paintbrush to dab the gum glue into the center of the larger flower, and then place the smaller flower on top.

6
Mix additional gum paste and fondant. Pinch a small piece off of the mixture, and roll it into a ball. Roll the ball in the colored luster dust. Dab another drop of gum paste glue into the center of the smaller flower, and place the colored ball in the center.

7
Gently place each flower in the flower former. Curve the petals slightly into the shape of the flower former. Allow them to dry and harden completely.
