How to Transfer to a New Apple Computer
Your new Apple Macintosh computer comes with the Migration Assistant program. This utility allows you to connect to your old Mac to transfer your files, applications and preferences. You can choose to transfer all of your accounts and files, or you can choose what to transfer and what to leave. Migration Assistant requires a connection via FireWire, Ethernet or wireless network.

Go to the "Apple" menu on your old Mac and select "Software Update." Install any recommended updates.

Go to the "Applications" folder on your new Mac and double-click on the "Utilities" folder. Double-click on the "Migration Assistant" icon.

Press the "Continue" button on the "Introduction" screen. Type an administrator password and press the "OK" button.

Set the "Migration Method" as "From another Mac." Press the "Continue" button.

Connect your computers with FireWire by plugging a FireWire cable into each port and pressing "Continue." Skip to Step 6 if connecting with Ethernet or wireless network.

Connect your computers with Ethernet by plugging an Ethernet cable into each port. Connect your computers with a wireless network by connecting them both to your local network in the "Network" pane of the "System Preferences."

Click "Use Network" on the new computer. Press the "Continue" button and press "From another Mac." Open "Migration Assistant" on your old Mac. Click "Use Network," click the "Continue" button and press "To another Mac." Enter the passcode specified in the onscreen prompt to connect the computers through Ethernet or wireless network.

Use the "Migration Assistant" window to choose your old Mac's hard disk and the user accounts you want to transfer. For each user account, you can specify if you want to transfer your applications, the account's files and folders and the "Library" folder that contains an account's preferences.

Use the options settings to transfer network, time zone and Sharing information. Click "Transfer" to transfer the selected information to your new computer.
