A two-toned paver patio design

Crusher run stone is a type of crushed gravel used in the "dry" installation method when laying patio pavers. This type of installation method uses crusher run stone and sand to secure the pavers rather than mortar, which makes it an easier and less messy way to install pavers. Laying the pavers yourself can potentially save you hundreds of dollars compared to the cost of hiring someone to do the job for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Dial 811, a free service that will come to your home and check for underground utility wires in the spot where you want to dig.

    • 2

Measure the desired length and width of your patio and mark off the border with spray paint.

    • 3

Excavate the entire area within the border you marked off 6 to 7 inches deep into the ground.

    • 4

Set a two-by-four on the ground in the area you excavated and set a level on top of the two-by-four. Check to ensure the slope runs away from your home. This will help avoid future flooding issues.

    • 5

Install edging restraint by lining the edging along the inner wall inside the area you excavated. Secure the edging by pounding metal spikes through the holes in the edging and into the ground.

    • 6

Pour a 1-inch layer of crusher run stone. Rake the stone until you have a smooth, even layer. Use a plate compactor, which you can rent from most home improvement stores, to compact the crusher run stone. Repeat this step of pouring 1-inch layers and compacting until you have 4 inches of compacted crusher run stone.

    • 7

Pour a 2-inch layer of sand on top of the crusher run stone. Lean over and drag a two-by-four or other flat board across the surface of the sand, creating a flat surface.

    • 8

Set the pavers one at a time atop the bed of sand, starting in one corner and working across one row at a time. Place the pavers so they are flush against one another. Tap each paver into place with the rubber mallet.

    • 9

Pour sand atop the surface of the pavers and use a broom to spread the sand around and into the cracks between the pavers.
