How to Reset a Locked iPod Without iTunes

From time to time the Apple iPod multimedia player can freeze or lock up like a computer. Usually this can be rectified by plugging the iPod into your computer and running iTunes. However, if you do not have access to your computer you can manually reset the iPod using the device's on-board controls.

  • Verify that the "Hold" switch on the iPod is disengaged. The switch is located on the top of the iPod. Slide it so that the orange color is not visible next to the switch.

  • Hold down the "Play" button until the screen goes dark. Press it again until the screen lights up again. If nothing happens, proceed to Step 3.

  • Hold down the "Menu" and the "Play/Pause" buttons at the same time for up to 30 seconds until the screen goes blank and the Apple logo appears. If this button combination does not work, proceed to Step 4.

  • Hold down "Menu" and "Select" at the same time for 30 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Models such as the Mini and Nano have a "Select" button. For iPods that lack a click wheel, proceed to Step 5.

  • Hold down the main front button on the iPod Touch device until the screen goes black and restarts. For iPod Shuffles, slide the power switch back and forth from the "Off" to "On" position.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may need to repeat the reset process multiple times before the device successfully unlocks.
