How to Install a Network Card in an HP 4P Printer
The HP LaserJet 4P is a popular personal laser printer, but with a network card or external print server it can easily become a network printer as well. There are many advantages to setting up a LaserJet 4P as a network printer, including lower overall cost and a reduction in the number of printers needed in the office.

- Network card or external print server

Using an External Print Server

Purchase an external print server for your LaserJet 4P printer. A number of external print servers work with this printer, including part numbers J3263A, J3265A and J2591A.

Connect the parallel port of the LaserJet 4P to the external print server. Connect a CAT5 cable from the RJ45 connection on the external print server to the network port on the wall.

Log on to a computer on your company network and send a test page to the printer. Make sure the page prints correctly.
Using an Internal Network Card

Turn the LaserJet 4P printer off and remove the power cord. Locate the slot for the network card.

Remove the screws from the network slot cover and set them aside. Remove the cover from the network slot cover.

Slide the network card in place and secure it with the thumbscrews. Be sure to slide the card in the whole way--you will feel the card snap into place. Secure the network card with the thumbscrews.
