How to Store ColecoVision Cartridges

How to Store ColecoVision Cartridges thumbnail
The ColecoVision started selling more units than Atari in 1983.

ColecoVision was one of the first major home video game systems in the United States. Hitting the U.S. market in 1982, ColecoVision went on to sell more than 6,000,000 video game systems. Its advanced graphics and packaged-in game, Donkey Kong, made the ColecoVision an instant hit. The ColecoVision is now a collector's item for video game enthusiasts. The age of the video game cartridges makes proper storage imperative. A dark place, free of dust and moisture provides the best protection for these old games.

Instructions

  1. Using Plastic Bags

    • 1

Purchase small plastic zip-lock bags large enough to fit a ColecoVision cartridge.

    • 2

Place the cartridge inside the plastic bag and squeeze out any excess air.

    • 3

Seal the bag once all the air has been removed. The bag will prevent dust and moisture from damaging the cartridge.

    Enclosed Shelf Cabinet

    • 4

Purchase a shelf cabinet with door attached. The shelf will provide a place to organize the cartridges and the doors will keep out light. Lengthy exposure to light can cause cartridges to fade and become brittle.

    • 5

Line up the cartridges in a row. Never stack them on one another.

    • 6

Regularly check the cabinet for moisture and dust. Any moisture or dust should be immediately removed. An abundance of moisture and dust may indicate that you need to move the cabinet to another location.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contrary to popular belief, blowing into video game cartridges does not make games work. While this method might work temporarily, the moisture in your breath will cause the metal connectors in the cartridge to corrode. Blowing into a video game cartridge is one of the worst things you can do if you are trying to preserve any video game cartridge.
