How to Delete the Backup File From an Automated System Recovery
Automated System Recovery (ASR) creates backup files on your hard drive to aid in the recovery of your personal data in a system crash. ASR runs on a fixed schedule and creates a new backup file whenever it runs. Older backup files are not deleted or updated when ASR creates a new backup. You can use the Disk Cleanup tool to free space on your hard drive by deleting the old backup files.

Run the Disk Cleanup application. Select "Accessories" from the "Start" menu. Highlight "System Tools" and select on "Disk Cleanup" from the sub-menu.

Select the "C:\" drive from the list of available drives. Click "OK." The Disk Cleanup utility will perform calculations and present you with the "Disk Cleanup" window.

Select the "More Options" tab in the "Disk Cleanup" window. Click on the "Clean Up" button under the "System Restore" listing. A warning dialog will appear.

Click "Yes" on the warning dialog. Click "OK" in the "Disk Cleanup" window to remove the old backup files from your computer hard drive.

Tips & Warnings
Run the Disk Cleanup utility once a month to maximize the amount of disk space on your computer.
Once the old backup files have been deleted, you will not be able to recover them.
