How to Feed a Russian Dwarf Hamster Daily

Russian dwarf hamsters are tiny and don't need that much food.

The scientific name for a Russian dwarf hamster is Phodopus campbelli. These tiny hamsters only grow to an average of 8 to 10 cm in length. Feeding the Russian dwarf hamster correctly is important. This is because the Russian dwarf hamster is a hoarder. You don't want to overfeed the tiny hamster so it is best to break down what the Russian dwarf hamster needs to eat on a daily basis.

Things You'll Need

• Bottled drinking water
• Hamster food pellets
• Mealworm
• Cricket
• Fresh veggies

Instructions

1. Set out fresh bottled water for your Russian dwarf hamster each day. Your hamster only requires 5 ml of bottled water daily, but it is best to have slightly more than this available. Your hamster will not overdrink.

2. Choose a hamster food made of pellets that contains a minimum of 14 percent protein. Set out 5 to 7 g of these pellets each day for your Russian dwarf hamster to eat.

3. Give your Russian dwarf hamster a mealworm or a cricket. Choose only one day a week to do this. This is an excellent treat for your pet, but it is not good for your pet to eat it on a daily basis.

4. Give your Russian dwarf hamster 2 oz. of fresh veggies. Again, you only want to offer this treat once per week. Too many fresh veggies can cause diarrhea in hamsters.

Tips & Warnings

• Always check the manufacturer's date on the hamster pellets to make sure the food is fresh.

• Do not feed your Russian dwarf hamster any junk food. This type of hamster has a tendency toward diabetes.

• Do not feed your Russian dwarf hamster tap water because it has chlorine in it.
