The appearance of pop-ups on a computer is often associated with an infection of a Trojan or other virus. When viruses infect a computer, they install a number of different programs that can have a devastating effect on the computer's privacy, security and performance. Furthermore, many of these programs can disable or hinder any preexisting security programs that may have been installed on the computer, making it even more vulnerable to future infections. Luckily, despite their devastating effects, pop-up viruses can be deleted in a few simple steps.
Things You'll Need
- External hard drive, CD or DVD
- Anti-virus software
Deleting the Virus
Back up any valuable files that could be compromised during the removal process, such as photos, documents or music. Burn the files to a CD or DVD or move them to the external hard drive for safekeeping. Make sure that only uninfected files are backed up, or the computer will be reinfected when exposed to the files.
Install an anti-virus internet security program onto the infected computer. There are many different programs available, for pay and for free, such as Windows Defender, Spyhunter, Spyblocker, STOPzilla and MalwareBytes Anti Malware, to name a few.
Run the anti-virus security program by clicking on the shortcut icon installed on the Desktop or from the Program Files folder found in the Start menu.
Select the Scan option from the program's tools. Make sure to select every drive of the computer to be scanned, or some virus programs may elude detection. Since spyware and virus files often install themselves under unassuming file names, using a third-party security program is more effective than relying on manual detection.
Click on Show Results when the program has finished scanning the computer. This can take a couple minutes, depending on how many files are installed and the size of the computer's hard drive. Select any pop-up virus files or any other dangerous files that were detected by the scan, then the program's erase and remove option to delete them from the computer.
Update your computer's security software regularly to ensure the computer is protected from any new threats that may arise.
