How to Troubleshoot the Defragmenter in Vista
The Windows Vista defragmenter is a tool used to bring separated pieces of computer files together to help the computer run more efficiently. Running the defragmenter once a week helps keep the system running smoothly, since it reorganizes random files. If you are having problems opening or running the disc defragmenter, you need to troubleshoot the defragmenter to fix the problem. There are three methods to fixing the software on Vista.

Go to "Start > Run" on your computer.

Type in "%Windir%\Inf" and hit "OK." A file should pop up on the right side of the window.

Right click on the file name and hit "Install." This will reinstall the defragmenter program, which may eliminate any problems you may be having.
Method Two

Go to "Start > Run" on your computer.

Type in "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\dfrg.inf."

Hit "OK" to make the program automatically reinstall itself.
Method Three

Log onto your computer as an Administrator.

Press down on the "Shift" key while right clicking on your desktop. This will open the Command Prompt.

Type in "regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll" and hit "Enter."

Type in "regsvr32 dfrgui.dll" and hit "Enter." This will reinstall any missing software pieces.
