How to Wire a Double Light Socket

Double light sockets are designed to provide extra light in large high-use areas. These lights can be installed anywhere within a home but living rooms and kitchens are the most common places. Newer model double light sockets are designed with the sockets already connected. This allows the fixture to have only one pair of wires to hook up. Older models have two pairs of wires, one pair for each socket. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power at the main power panel for the circuit that the new light sockets will be added to. Verify the power is off with a voltage tester.

Remove the old fixture. Unsplice the wires and set the fixture to the side. A light socket has two wires. One wire connects to the threaded portion of the socket and the other connects to the center contacts. The center contacts should be connected to the black wire. The threaded portion of the socket should be connected to the white wire.

If the new fixture has one pair of wires, then splice the center contact wire from the light socket to the black wire and thread wire to the white wire. Twist on two splice caps and install the new fixture.

If the fixture has two pairs of wires, then connect both contact wires from each socket together. Then connect those two wires to the black wire. Connect the other two light socket wires together and connect them to the white wire. Add splice caps and install the new fixture.
