How to Paint a Ceramic Tile Countertop
Many homeowners assume that because the surface of ceramic tile has been glazed, you cannot apply paint to it without the paint peeling after a short period of time. While painting ceramic tile in some areas, such as the bathroom, is not the best idea, you can paint a tile counter to give your kitchen a fresh look. Things You'll Need
- Household cleaner with oxygen bleach
- Scrub brush
- Painter's tape
- Oil-based paint
- Paintbrush or roller

Clean the tile and grout thoroughly with a household cleaner that contains oxygen bleach. Use the scrub brush to clean oil, grease, dirt and other contaminants from both the tiles and the grout. Rinse the countertop with clean water. Let it sit for at least 48 hours to allow the grout to dry.

Mask the wall, counters and any other area you don't want painted. Masking tape works in a pinch, but blue painter's tape is thicker and easier to remove after the painting is done.

Use a brush or roller to apply oil-based paint directly to the tile. You can save time by painting the tile and grout the same color. If you want to paint the grout a different color, you will have to mask each individual tile with painter's tape before applying the grout paint.

Remove the painter's tape when the paint is dry.

Tips & Warnings
If you cannot find a suitable oil-based paint, you can opt for a water-based paint that contains urethane resin.
Open as many windows as possible before you start painting. The fumes from oil-based paint can irritate your eyes and throat.
