How to Get a Work Permit at 15

Child labor laws require all minors under the age of 18 to obtain a work permit. To be able to work at 15, you need to complete and file a request for an employment certificate. Depending on the state you live in, you receive the certificate either from the labor department or your school.

Instructions

1. Visit the career center or guidance counselor at your high school. Ask for a work permit application. If the school does not have an application on hand, ask if you can print one online.

2. Complete the application. Fill in the top section that requires your personal information. Ask your employer to complete the middle section. Have your parent or a guardian sign the application.

3. Return the work permit application to your high school. Your school will process the application. This may take up to two days.

4. Take the work permit you receive from your school to your employer. Keep a copy of the permit for your records.

5. Review the child labor laws. Make sure you and your employer follow the laws to avoid penalties.
