How to Make a Banner on the Computer

A banner is a rectangular graphic that can be printed or used on a website. The graphic can contain images, text and animation, and is often used to advertise a product, service or company. You do not have to be a professional designer or website developer to create a banner on your computer, although it helps if you have some creative and technical skills. Luckily, creating a simple website banner on your computer is fairly easy and can be completed in a short amount of time.

How to Make a Banner on the Computer

  • Turn on your computer and open up a graphic design application. You can use simple applications such as Paint or Paintbrush or you can use a more advanced graphic design program such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop Pro. While many of these applications require payment for purchase or download, other applications, such as Aviary and Inkscape, are free and can be accessed through your web browser.

  • Create a new document. Click on the "File" menu and select "New..." Determine how large or small you would like your banner and enter the dimensions in pixels or inches. Website banners come in a variety of sizes including 468 x 60 pixels for full banners, 120 x 240 pixels for vertical banners, and 234 x 60 pixels for half banners. If you are not making a website banner, the dimensions are not as important and you can be more flexible with the size.

  • Determine the background color for your banner or if you plan to use a special gradient, texture or pattern. Use the paintbrush and paint bucket tools to create your background.

  • Add images to your banner. You can either import images from your computer through one of the application menus, or you can copy and paste images from the Internet. Consult the user manual for the particular application you are using for more detailed instructions on adding images to your document.

  • Add text to your banner. Use the "text" tool of your graphic design application to input text on top of your banner's background. Make sure the text is large enough so that it can be easily read.

  • Save the file as a JPEG, GIF, BMP or other image type. If you plan to use the banner on a website, you can use a web design program like iWeb or Dreamweaver to import the banner. If you need a physical banner, simply print out the banner image you have created through your graphic design application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use high-quality images and background textures to make your banner look more professional.
  • Avoid using highly contrasting or very similar colors for your text, as this can cause eye strain for whomever is trying to read your banner.
