How to Make a Football Pool Grid

A football pool grid is sometimes used by fans during the Super Bowl or other major American football games. At the end of each quarter or game, fans who purchased a square in the grid match up the end digit of the home team’s score with the end digit of the away team’s score. If there’s a match, the square’s purchaser wins. If you want to create your own football grid, you can do it with a few pieces of paper and a pen.

Things You'll Need

• 2 pens, different colors
• Lineless paper
• poster board (optional)
• hat (optional)

Instructions

1. Draw a 10-by-10 grid on the paper, creating 100 even-sized squares. Each square represents one betting unit. For display purposes you can draw the same grid on poster board.

2. Create an additional vertical and horizontal row of squares along the outside of the original grid. Use a different color from the original 100 squares.

3. Ask your players to place bets within the original 100 squares. Each square should cost the same amount. Have them mark their purchased squares with their initials or a nickname. Give a time limit or deadline so that the squares fill up faster.

4. Randomly insert the digits zero through nine along the outer vertical and horizontal squares. You can do this by writing the numbers on a piece of paper and putting them in a hat, writing in the digit you draw (without duplication) in each square.

5. Write the word “Home” along the grid’s top and “Away” along the grid’s bottom. You will now be able to see which scoring unit each better has placed. Make copies of each completed grid and distribute among the players.

Tips & Warnings

• Make payoffs by the end of quarter score so that betters will be more likely to purchase more units since there will be additional chances to win.
