How to Sign the Title Over on a Car in Texas
In Texas, you can't simply give a car away. You have to sign over the title of the vehicle as well. Texas has simplified the process by enabling a seller to sign the title and transfer legal ownership of the car to someone else. What do you do if you can't find the title? What parts of the title do you need to sign? Many people don't know the answers to these questions. Thankfully the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles does. Record the odometer readings on the car.

Remove the license tags from your car if you want to keep them. If you decide to keep them, contact the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles for instructions. You will have to pay a small fee. You will then be able to use the tags on another vehicle.

Read the title carefully to become familiar with its contents before writing on it. When filling out the title, you will have one chance to do it correctly. Instructions on the bottom of the title clearly read: "Do not accept this title if it shows signs of erasure, alteration, or mutilation".

Fill out the section on the title labeled "Assignment of Title." This is located on the back of the title. Enter your name, the date of the transfer and the odometer reading of the car. These fields will be clearly marked. Do not write in any of the other sections. The individual who receives the title will complete those sections.

Sign your name on the front of the title in the section labeled "Signature of Owner." . Your portion of the title transfer process will be complete. The title recipient will handle the rest of the transaction.
