How to Fix a Hole in a Cultured Marble Shower

Save

Cultured marble is a durable material frequently used for counters and shower surrounds. While this product is easy to care for and maintain, there are times when damage or holes can occur. Whether you are moving a grab bar, or have cut a hole for plumbing repairs, you'll want to patch the hole seamlessly with the rest of the surround. Cultured marble repair kits are available that can help you to make this repair yourself at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor blade
  • Cultured stone repair kit containing gel coat, catalyst and titanium powder
  • Paint stick
  • Fine-grit sand paper
  • Buffing compound
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Make sure that the surround in the vicinity of the hole is clean and dry. If there is soap scum or residue, clean the surround well and allow it to dry completely before beginning.

  • Scrape the edges of the hole with a razor blade to remove any rough edges, or pieces of cultured marble that are coming loose. Hold the blade at a 45-degree angle to the surround, and pull it downward to scrape.

  • Mix the repair compound. Each kit will vary in amounts of each substance, but will contain gel coat, catalyst and titanium powder as well as the color needed to match your surround. Use a paint stick to mix together the compound.

  • Use the paint stick to apply the mixture directly to the hole in the surround. Smooth the mixture over the hole, and allow the mixture to overlap the edges of the hole slightly. The compound will shrink slightly as it dries; allowing it to overfill the hole will keep it from coming loose as it dries.

  • Allow the compound to dry for 24 hours and then wet it down slightly with water. Sand the edges of the patch with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out the patch and make it blend into the rest of the cultured marble.

  • Apply a small amount of buffing compound to a lint-free cloth and then buff the patch with the cloth. This will polish the patch and help the repair blend in further with the surround.
