How to Paint Vinyl Floor Tiles

If your vinyl flooring has lost its bright color after a few years (or has just gone out of style), consider painting it. Most floor surfaces can be painted, with the proper preparation and sealing. The paint must have a de-glossed surface to stick to, and then must be topped with at least three layers of urethane, a clearing finishing gloss that will holding the paint in place and prevent it from picking up stains. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Vibrating sander with medium-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Buff the surface of the vinyl floor with your vibrating sander and medium-grit sandpaper, taking up any shine and grime. Clean up the dust and let it dry completely.

    • 2

Roll a layer of sealing primer over the floor, using a floor roller and starting from the far corner of the room, away from the doorway. Let it dry for a day.

    • 3

Apply a first layer of floor paint with a brush. Keep the brushstrokes going consistently in one direction. Let it dry for a day, then brush on a second coat. Let it set for two days.

    • 4

Brush urethane gloss onto the floor, starting at the same far corner and working your way out. Brush the urethane on in one consistent direction, making sure not to let bubbles form. Let it set overnight.

    • 5

Go over the dry urethane with fine sandpaper, by hand, using quick shallow strokes to dull the surface so the next coat will stick. Wipe up the dust.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of urethane in the same way as the first. Let it dry. Dull the shine with fine sandpaper. Apply a third coat, and let it cure for at least 72 hours before using the floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never sand any vinyl floor that you suspect may contain asbestos. If you think your floor might be from the 1980s or earlier, have a sample tested by your local health department before you proceed.
