The AK-47 is the most prolific firearm ever made. It was developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov and first put into service in 1947. Reportedly more than 90 million have been made and the AK has been used in practically every military conflict since its inception. The rifle has a simple design with wide tolerances, making it an ideal weapon for guerrilla warfare. It rarely needs cleaning and has a reputation for continuing to shoot under adverse conditions.
Things You'll Need
Make the Gun Safe
Remove the magazine from the AK-47. Check the chamber to make sure the gun is unloaded. The safety is on the right-hand side of the gun. Raise it as high as it will go to put the weapon on safe. You are now ready to work on the rifle.
Pull the cleaning rod out from under the barrel. It will slide forward in the direction of the barrel. Underneath the front sight assembly will be a small screw. Using a small flat-head screwdriver, turn the screw counter-clockwise until it comes out.
The front sight assembly should move freely around the barrel of your gun. Remove it by slipping it over the end of the rifle. Put the screw in a safe place as it will be essential to the reassembly of the front sight assembly.
Reassemble your front sight by first putting it on the end of the barrel. Align the sight with the hole from which you removed the screw. Use your screwdriver to tighten the screw back into the gun by screwing it clockwise. Replace the cleaning rod. You are finished.
Tips & Warnings
- Beware that there are specific tools for adjusting the front sight to correct aim. They have nothing to to with removing the front site.
