How to Check on the Status of Disability Claims

Once you submit a disability claim to your local Disability Determination Services office, you may need to periodically check the status of the claim. One way to check the claim status is to call the Social Security Administration toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. The best way, however, is to call the Disability Determination Services (DSS) office in your state, since the Social Security Administration line is not updated frequently. A representative will be able to tell you your status and whether any documents are missing.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your state DDS office (see Resources). If your state has multiple offices, call the office closest to where you live.

    • 2

State your name and the case number of the disability claim you filed. Ask whether your case has been reviewed, and if so, whether it has been approved or denied. If the case is still pending, ask to speak to the DDS representative who will be reviewing your case.

    • 3

Write down information about any forms, such as medical records, that the DDS office needs but has not received. You may need to contact your doctor's office to ensure that the forms were submitted and were sent to the proper address.
