Choose a theme based on your two year old's interests. For a dinosaur party, fill large roasting pans with sand and let the party guests excavate small plastic dinosaurs. Have a dinosaur shaped cake, and hand out dinosaur tattoos as party favors. Throw a dog lovers party by having the children hunt for bone shaped cookies, serve cupcakes with paw prints on them and give dog-themed coloring books as party favors. Have a princess party, with crowns and wands as favors for all the guests. Spray paint a large appliance box gray, and give the guests sparkly stickers and washable paints to decorate the "castle." Bake a round cake, and use sugar ice cream cones to create a crown around it. Frost both the cake and the cones, and decorate with colored sugars and small candies.

Create activities that will entertain the birthday boy and his guests. On warm days, put out swimming pools filled with bubble solution and bubble wands for a bubble party. Stage a parade by giving the guests toy instruments and having them march around the house under the birthday girl's leadership. Set out washable paints, round up some easels and warn the parents to dress the guests in old clothes for a painting party. Even the smallest guests can participate in a pinata if you buy or make the pull string version.

Keep foods simple, but provide a small variety because toddlers can be picky eaters. Make three kinds of sandwiches, such as peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese or bologna, and cut them up with cookie cutters to make them special. Pizza is always a popular choice. Have snack foods like goldfish and raisins on hand at all times for the kids to eat. Serve cake with two kinds of ice cream so every child can choose his favorite. Scoop out the ice cream the night before, wrap in waxed paper and keep in the freezer. At party time, it will be easy to have all the cake and ice cream ready at the same time.
