How to Fix a Snowblower Belt

How to Fix a Snowblower Belt thumbnail
Snowblower belts should be checked every year.

A snow blower belt is very similar in design and set up to a car belt. If you have replaced a car belt before, you will breeze through this replacement procedure. Snow blower belts should be replaced and the gear systems lubricated every year. If the belt is frayed or cracked, replace it immediately. For the experienced maintenance man, the entire job will take about 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull out the cotter pin on the tensioner pulley spring. The tensioner is a smaller pulley that is situated between the two main pulleys. The belt does not run completely around the tensioner; instead, the tensioner pulley sits on top of the belt, providing tension to the belt system.

    • 2

Push the tensioner up and away from the belt and then remove the belt from the two main pulleys.

    • 3

Place the new belt around the two main pulleys and under the tensioner pulley.

    • 4

Push the tensioner pulley back into place and then reinsert the cotter pin to secure the spring system and secure the tensioner in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your snowblower does not have a spring and pin system to lock the tensioner, loosen the tensioner hexagonal bolt with a socket wrench and slide it away from the belt system to remove the belt.

  • Lubricate your snow blower pulley bolts with grease while the belt is off.
