Directions on How to Wear a Sari
India has a rich tradition of religion, storytelling and dress. The sari is an important part of the traditional Indian dress. A sari is a scarf worn by women over their undergarments. A sari can be tied in a number of ways, depending on the region of India. There are some general guidelines, however.

1
Tuck the top corner of the sari into the top edge of the petticoat to the right of your belly button. From this tucked-in point, wrap the sari around your body once. Make sure the hem of the sari touches the ground. Tuck it in again at the same spot. You should be left with lots of loose material.

2
Pleat the loose material of the sari. Fold the material over at five-inch intervals and create five to seven pleats. Gather the pleats into a stack and fasten them together with a safety pin to keep them neat. The ends of the pleats should be even and not touch the ground.

3
Tuck the stack of pleats into the top of the petticoat to the left of your belly button. They should fall open toward the left. You should still have a length of loose material left in the sari.

4
Wrap the remaining material around your body, moving to the right. When you bring the material around your front again, pull it up under your right arm to drape across your chest and over your left shoulder. Allow the excess material to drop down over your left shoulder to your knee. Fasten the sari at your left shoulder with a safety pin to keep it in place.
