How to Start a Computer Training School

1. Find a location easily accessible to the public with a lot of open space for tables and chairs. Also ensure the building has ample ventilation and air conditioning, since a host of computers in one area can quickly warm a room.

2. Obtain a business license. Check with your city, county and state government offices on the required paperwork.

3. Acquire business insurance to cover both your building and its contents. Work with an insurance agent to make sure you arrange adequate coverage.

4. Prepare your building interior to meet your needs, especially the electrical. Older structures, in particular, lack the proper wiring to safely run multiple electronic devices. Also ensure sufficient outlets are conveniently located.

5. Purchase necessary equipment. This includes computers, monitors, speakers, printers, tables, chairs, keyboards, a mouse for each computer, screen and projector, whiteboard, pens and markers, paper, all necessary wiring, hardware and software.

6. Develop a curriculum. Make sure you are familiar with it before classes begin.

7. Market your training school. Place announcements in the local newspaper and in community center newsletters. Place fliers at churches, supermarkets and senior centers. Begin networking with other businesses and build valuable partnerships.

Tips & Warnings

• Consider obtaining certifications in different software and operating systems before starting the process of opening a computer training school. Those certifications will boost your credentials and show potential customers they can trust your expertise.

• Consider purchasing flood insurance. Many business policies do not cover water damage at all.
