How to Use a Hot Metal Tool to Cut Foam Board
A hot metal tool--more commonly called a hot wire cutter--is a necessity if you're planning on doing any crafts that involve cutting lots of foam. The hot wire cutter is essentially a tensioned metal wire connected to a power source that, when the power is turned on, becomes so hot that it literally vaporizes the foam as it comes in contact with it. This offers far more precise and clean cuts in the foam than any other method could achieve. You can buy foam cutters from dealers or even make them at home, thanks to the simplicity of their construction.

1
Make marks on the foam board with your marker, indicating exactly where you wish to cut.
-
2
Turn on your hot wire foam cutter. The exact method for turning on the cutter will vary depending on if the cutter is homemade or store bought. If it is store bought, turn on the power switch. If it is homemade, connect the power source or in some way activate the current to allow the wire to heat up.

Position the foam board just in front of the cutting wire. Line up the cutting wire with the edge of the marks you made in step one, then slowly begin sliding the board into the wire. The wire should be hot enough that it will start cutting easily through the foam.

4
Position your hands to the sides of the wire, being careful not to get too close, as the wire will cause severe burns if touched. Guide the foam board into the wire along the markings you made. Guide the foam smoothly, and try to avoid any jerky movements, as this may result in uneven or ugly cuts in the foam.
