FM or Frequency Modulation transmits information over a carrier wave by varying its frequency. FM functions well when the reception of the FM radio waves by the antenna is good. FM reception is often distorted and weak if you're a far distance from the FM station, you have interference with other stations or the antenna is not positioned correctly.
Things You'll Need
- 75 ohm dipole television antenna
- Copper wire
Locate the external antenna input situated at the back of your FM radio. Loosen the screws and connect the 75 ohm dipole television antenna. Tighten back the screws. Now take the antenna to the rooftop and select an appropriate spot for mounting the antenna. You can use trial and error for this. You can use push pins or nails for mounting the antenna.
Wrap the antenna completely with copper wire to increase the FM reception.
Switch the FM mode from "stereo" to "mono." Stereo mode requires greater signal strength compared to mono mode. Use the Stereo mode only when you are receiving strong signals. The mono mode is best suited for weak signals.
Change the position of your FM antenna (in case if you are already using an antenna). Just move around holding the antenna, pointing it toward different directions. The position and direction that provide the best clarity and least distortion is the best position.
Extend fully the telescopic antenna (the extendable type of antenna that can be extended and collapsed) of your FM receiver. These antennas work more efficiently when they are fully extended. You may also wrap the antenna with copper wire for better reception.
Tips & Warnings
- Use a cutting plier to cut the copper wire.
- Clean the copper wire and antenna properly.
- Be very careful while dealing with copper wire. They are sharp and can cause serious injuries. Keep them away from the eye.
