How to Crochet a Cupcake Hat
In recent years, cupcakes have become popular confections. Cupcakeries---bakeries that solely make cupcakes---thrive in metropolitan areas throughout the United States, and at many celebrations, cupcake towers have replaced traditional cakes. The cupcake trend isn't just culinary in nature; the diminutive cake, with its fluffy frosting top and pleated paper cup, is a popular icon for stationary, clothing and accessories. If you're looking for a way to embrace the cupcake trend, crochet a whimsical cupcake hat. This easy-to-make hat takes little time to whip up and it will look almost good enough to eat.
Things You'll Need
- Yarn for cupcake base (yarn A)
- Yarn for cupcake frosting (yarn B)
- Crochet hook
- Yarn needle

1
Create a crochet chain with yarn A that measures 3 inches in length. To begin your chain, make a slipknot at the end of your yarn. A tail of at least 4 inches should hang from one side of the knot, and your working yarn will hang from the other side. Slide the slipknot onto your crochet hook; yarn over, wrapping the working yarn from the back of your crochet hook to the front), and draw the yarn over through the slipknot loop. Yarn over, draw through the previous chain stitch's loop and repeat until your chain is the correct length.
-
2
Single-crochet into the chain that's one stitch away from the crochet hook to begin row one. Push your crochet hook under the top of the chain stitch---the side that looks like a "V"---yarn over and draw your hook back through the stitch. Yarn over once more and draw through the two loops on your hook to create your first single crochet. Single-crochet into each subsequent chain stitch.

3
Turn your work for row two, chain one and single-crochet into every stitch in the row. However, instead of sliding your crochet hook under both sides of the "V" at the top of each stitch, insert your hook only into the back leg of the "V." Starting your single crochet stitches in this manner will create a ribbed look.
-
4
Continue working rows of single crochet as for row two until the length of your work equals the circumference of the wearer's head. Break the yarn, leaving a tail of at least 4 inches in length.
-
5
Single-crochet into the stitches along one of the long sides of your ribbed panel, using yarn B. When you get to the end of the row, make a slip stitch to join your work for crocheting in the round. To make a slip stitch, push your hook under the top of the first single-crochet stitch in the row, yarn over and draw it through both the stitch and the loop on the crochet hook. This is your first frosting row.

6
Chain one and single-crochet into every stitch in the round. When you get to the end of the round, slip-stitch into the first single crochet. Doing this at the end of each round will keep them from looking like they're spiraling up the side of the hat.
-
7
Work around with single crochet until your hat measures 5 inches in length and then begin decreasing.
-
8
Single-crochet into two stitches. Single-crochet two stitches together and repeat for the first decrease round. When single crocheting two stitches together, insert your hook into the first single crochet stitch, yarn over and draw through. Then insert the hook into the next single crochet stitch; yarn over and draw through. Finish crocheting the two stitches together by making a yarn over and drawing it through the three loops on the hook.
-
9
Single-crochet one row without decreases and then crochet a decrease row in the same manner you worked the first one. Continue until 6 or 8 stitches remain; end with a slip stitch and chain one. Break your yarn, leaving a 4-inch long tail.
-
10
Create a frosting ruffle with yarn B by double-crocheting into the side of each stitch in the first frosting row. Create a double crochet, using the following instructions: Yarn over. Insert your hook into the stitch and yarn over. Draw through the stitch and yarn over. Draw through two loops and yarn over. Draw through the remaining two loops.
-
11
Seam the sides of the cupcake base with a yarn needle and weave in any loose yarn ends.

Tips & Warnings
If you want to add some decorative touches to your hat, you can embroider sprinkles onto the frosting top with scraps of colorful yarn, just randomly sew straight stitches that measure about 1/4 inch in length.
