How to File for an Abandoned Vehicle Title in Arizona thumbnail
Abandoned vehicles may be claimed in Arizona.

If you are in possession of an abandoned vehicle in Arizona, you may claim it as your own. Most of the process is handled by a director of the Department of Motor Vehicles; all you have to do is start the process and wait for a reply. As long as the vehicle is not claimed by the owner, the Department of Motor Vehicles will issue a new title to you as the new owner.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in your county and file a report of the abandoned vehicle using the DMV's abandoned vehicle form. Include the description of the vehicle (make, model, year and color) along with the license plate number and vehicle identification number.

    • 2

File a notice of intent to transfer the ownership of the vehicle through the DMV. This requires the filing of a transfer of ownership form with the department.

    • 3

Wait 45 days for the DMV to contact the previous owner of the vehicle. The DMV will also list the vehicle as abandoned in the newspaper if the owner does not respond or the letter of contact is returned.

    • 4

Complete the transfer of title form for the vehicle and return this to the DMV to title the vehicle in your own name. This will be sent to you in the mail if no one responds to the DMV's contact letters or newspaper ad.
