How to Use a Garmin 76 GPS
The Garmin GPSMAP 76 guides overland and waterborne explorers to their destination and back to their starting point in a less-than-8-ounce handheld device. Navigators familiar with the Garmin's use and tools easily track their progress on a route, and can archive more than 1,000 locations in its memory. With its waterproof properties, the Garmin GPSMAP 76 finds additional use on the water. In addition to the maps, tides and astronomical information preloaded on the device, 8 megabytes of memory allow uploading of additional information into the the GPS.

Creating A Route

Turn the GPSMAP 76 on by pressing and holding the red power key on the left side of the keypad. A tone will sound when the GPS powers up. Press the "Page" button on the upper right side of the keypad to acknowledge reading the warning pages that appear when the unit is turned on.

Create a route by pressing the "Menu" button twice to display the main menu. Use the rocker, the directional button on the keypad, to select the "Routes" option.

Choose "New" on the menu to open a blank route page for the creation of a new route.

Push the "Menu" button on the blank page to open the create route options. Use the choices to add waypoints to the route. The "Use Map" choice on the new route menu opens the map with a pointer to visually select locations on a map for the route. After moving the map pointer to the desired location, press the "Enter" key to create the waypoint, "Enter" again to save the waypoint, and "Enter" once more to insert the waypoint into the route. Alternatively, waypoints that have been entered into the GPS may be chosen by selecting the "Insert Waypoint" option.

Name the route by highlighting the name and using the rocker to spell the name for the route. Otherwise, the GPS uses the first and last waypoints for a name.

Turn the Garmin GPS on. Five pages are available when the unit is in operation: The GPS Information Page, the Map Page, the Pointer Page, the Highway Page and the Active Route Page. Cycle through the pages until the GPS Information page is displayed using the "Page" button. The GPS Information Page shows satellite information as well as current latitude and longitude.

Press the "Enter" key to mark the current location as a waypoint and start point for navigation. Name the waypoint as desired.

Clear the track log by pressing the "Menu" button twice to bring up the main menu. Highlight the option for "Tracks" and press "Enter." Choose the "Clear" option and press "Enter." Confirm clearing the track log by highlighting "Yes" and pressing "Enter." Display the Map Page by pressing the "Page" button until a screen displaying a map, speed and distance is shown.

Walk to a desired location. The GPS tracks the progress on the map and computes speed and distance. Add waypoints along the route to the GPS by pressing the "Enter" button.

Return from the destination to your starting location or any other waypoint by pressing the "Nav" button. Choose the "Go To Point" option and press "Enter" followed by the "Waypoints" option again pressing "Enter." Choose the desired waypoint and press "Enter." Highlight "Go To" in the displayed option menu and press "Enter." The Map Page will now display a pointer toward your destination.
