How to Connect a Laptop to a HDMI Television
If you've ever wanted to enjoy a high definition movie on your HDTV--but the movie only resides on your laptop--you can transfer those super detailed images to your TV screen. With a simple adapter, you can connect your laptop computer to an HDMI enabled high definition television.

Mac Laptops

Turn off the HDTV and your laptop.

Connect the HDMI adapter cable to the laptop's output port. Ensure that the connector is secure in the port.

Connect the HDMI adapter cable to the HDMI input on your television set. Ensure that the connection is solid and secure, but be careful not to bend any connector pins within the adapter.

Power on your HDTV first. This allows the Mac laptop to detect the connection between the devices when you power it on.

Turn your Mac laptop on, allowing it to completely boot up. Your Mac will automatically detect the HDTV through the HDMI connection and make the necessary adjustments. In a few moments, you should see the Mac's desktop on the HDTV screen.
Windows Laptops

Turn off the HDTV and your laptop. This allows both devices to clear any previous settings that may interfere with the connecting process.

Laptops interface well with high definition television sets. Connect the adapter to the output port on your laptop. Ensure that the connection is solid and secure, but be careful not to bend any connector pins within the adapter.

Connect the HDMI end of the adapter to the HDMI input port on your television set, making sure to push it in securely, but gently.

Turn the television on first, allowing it to completely power on. This allows the laptop to recognize the HD signal sent from the HDTV.

Power up the laptop, allowing it to completely boot up. Switch monitor sources by using the laptop's keyboard function keys. Most often, you'll hold down a button marked "Fn" and one of the function keys located at the top of the keyboard. You should now see your laptop's desktop on your HDTV monitor.

Different laptops come pre-installed with different video adapter ports. Check which port your computer uses before purchasing an HDMI adapter to connect to your laptop.
