How to Make a Funnel Out of Metal

How to Make a Funnel Out of Metal thumbnail
Metal funnels can be made cheaply at home.

Funnels can come in many shapes and sizes. While plastic and paper funnels are common and inexpensive they may not hold up to more strenuous tasks. A metal funnel can be made cheaply from metals that would otherwise be discarded as scrap. This funnel will stand up to all but the most extreme tasks for a long time.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the oxygen tank is empty. Open the valve fully and allow all gas to escape. It is not safe to cut open tanks that have gas in them.

    • 2

Use the angle grinder to cut the tank in two, nine inches from the valve.

    • 3

Cut off the valve. This should leave a one-inch-diameter hole in the top of the tank.

    • 4

Weld the length of pipe to the hole.

Tips & Warnings

  • Smaller-diameter lengths of pipe can be welded to the one-inch-diameter pipe in order to allow the funnel to be used for smaller diameter applications.

  • Be sure the tank has no gas in it. Cutting into a pressurized tank can lead to injury.
