Just as a red ribbon symbolizes HIV/AIDS awareness, or the pink ribbon symbolizes breast cancer awareness, the yellow ribbon symbolizes our support for U.S. troops. The yellow ribbon can be shown in two ways--as a simply ribbon worn on your shirt or jacket, or it can be tied in a bow around a tree. Although a seemingly small gesture, displaying the yellow ribbon offers your support, hope and thoughts to those serving or those who have served.
Things You'll Need
- Yellow ribbon, 4 inches long
- Straight pin
- Yellow ribbon, 3 yards long and about 3 inches wide
Lay the ribbon down onto a flat surface, keeping the ribbon vertical.
Hold down the bottom end of the ribbon with your non-dominant hand. With other hand, take the top end of the ribbon and pull it to the right while pulling it down. Crisscross the top end of the ribbon with the bottom end.
Insert a pin where the ribbons intersect to keep it in place. Wear the ribbon on your shirt, jacket or coat. While there is no specific way the ribbon should be worn, the ribbons are typically worn on the left side of a lapel or shirt.
Wrap the ribbon all the way around the trunk of your tree. Generally, the tree should be visible from the street.
Tie the ribbon in a double knot to ensure that the ribbon is tight around the tree.
Tie the ribbon into a simple bow at the base of the knot.
Cut the excess ends of the ribbon off with a pair of scissors. Angle the ends of the ribbon for a more attractive presentation.
