How to Read Mac Sparseimage File on a PC

A sparse image file format is a disk image used on a Mac. This file type changes size based on the amount of data stored within the file. These files are native to the OS X operating system but can be read within Windows with the use of some utilities.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with Windows XP or later.
  • Software capable of reading sparse image files

Using Sparse Image Files in Windows

  • Copy the sparse image file to the Windows computer from the Mac.

  • Download either MacDrive or TransMac onto the computer and install it.

  • Reboot the computer so all installations complete.

Using MacDrive

  • Open My Computer. A new icon will appear for Mac HD.

  • Right-click the Mac HD icon and then select "Mount."

  • Select the sparse image file. It will now be readable by the computer and can be worked on seamlessly within Windows.

Using TransMac

  • Open TransMac via "Start" and then "Programs."

  • Within TransMac click "File" and then "Open."

  • Select the sparse image file and click "Open". The contents of the file will now be listed and can now be accessed by double-clicking on the desired file.
