How to Recycle Asphalt Shingles

The main barrier to widespread asphalt recycling is the challenge of finding a place to recycle the shingles and the poor publication and marketing of recycling opportunities. In 2010, there are not many places that recycle asphalt, but there are ways to legally dispose of your asphalt by recycling it or donating it to an organization that could use it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find out whether your state has an asphalt shingle recycling program. Click on your state's name in the directory at ShingleRecycling.org. You'll get contact information for someone who works in waste recycling.

    • 2

Contact the waste recycling official in your state, using the contact information. Ask about asphalt shingle recycling programs.

    • 3

Bring your shingles to an asphalt recycling facility if there is one near you. If your state prefers that you recycle your asphalt as part of a building waste program, the waste-recycling official will provide you with the information you need to properly dispose of your shingles.

    • 4

Donate asphalt shingles to a charitable organization that can reuse them. Northeast Recycling Council suggests donating to Habitat for Humanity.

    • 5

Find organizations that might accept your asphalt shingles by using the Materials Exchange directory. Contact any relevant organizations to arrange donating or selling your old shingles.
