How to Make a Dress Out of a Sarong

How to Make a Dress Out of a Sarong thumbnail
A sarong easily becomes a dress.

A sarong offers you convenient coverage over bathing suits and your body during sun-bathing sessions and other leisurely activities. A sarong wraps around the body like a large square scarf and makes for an excellent base material for a breezy summer dress. Making your own dress out of a sarong doesn't take very many materials or much time. It creates a lovely, loosely flowing tube dress.

Things You'll Need

  • Sewing machine (pre-threaded)
  • Measuring tape
  • Sachet (matching general color of sarong)
  • Brooch

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the widest edge of the sarong down approximately 2 inches.

    • 2

Create a seam by sewing the edge of the folded material against the rest of the sarong. This creates a hollow loop in the edge of the sarong.

    • 3

Holding one end of the folded seam in each hand, bring each corner of the folded end of the material together.

    • 4

Sew a vertical seam from the folded ends all the way down. This brings the sarong together into a tube-like form.

    • 5

Complete the dress by slipping it on over your head or stepping into it.

    • 6

Tie the similarly colored sachet around your waist and add an accent to it by pinning a brooch near the band at the top of the dress.
