How to Connect Two PCs With a Crossover Cable

To connect two personal computers for file transfer purposes requires a crossover cable. This cable allows you to set up what is essentially a rudimentary computer network. Unlike a traditional network, you aren't using a device such as a computer router and there are only two computers connected, as opposed to many. You don't need to be a computer whiz to connect two PCs with a crossover cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug one end of a crossover cable into the Ethernet port on one of the two computers you'd like to connect. Then, plug the other end of the crossover cable into the Ethernet port on the second computer.

    • 2

Turn on both computers (if they are not already on).

    • 3

Click "Start" and then right-click "Computer." Click "Properties." Click "Computer Name." Click "Change" and enter a name in the "Work group" box. Repeat this step and change the work group name on the second computer to match the one you used on the first computer.

    • 4

Click "Start" and then "Control Panel." Open "Network Connections." Right-click on the "Local Area Network" icon and click "Properties." Click "General," and then select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." Once you have done this, click the "Properties" button. Repeat this step on the second computer.

    • 5

Click the tiny circle next to "Use the Following IP Address." Change the numerical value in the "IP Address" box to read "192.168.0.1." Change the numerical value in the "Subnet Mask" box to read "255.255.255.0." Change the numerical value in the "Default Gateway" box to read "192.168.0.2." Repeat this step on the second computer.

    • 6

Click the "OK" box on both computers. Each computer will be able to identify the other and both machines will now be connected via the crossover cable.
