Instructions

    • 1

Adjust skin tone colors before shooting with the 40D. Turn on Picture Style with the menu button on the rear of the camera. The button located on the top left corner of the camera turns on the menus.

    • 2

Press the small, circular toggle button on the rear of the camera to the right one click to display the second screen of menus. Press down on the toggle button to the sixth option, "Picture Style." Choose Picture Style by pressing in the black "Set" button in the center of the large, circular command dial on the back of the 40D.

    • 3

Choose the "Portrait" setting by turning the large command dial to the right one click. This will highlight the portrait setting. Press the "Info" button under the camera's LCD screen to display the sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone adjustments.

    • 4

Add warmth to an image by leaving the default portrait settings in place. The vivid contrast Canon technology is known for will stay the same, while the sharpness is slightly reduced, giving images the feel of a low-grade soft-focus filter.

    • 5

Make skin colors warmer or cooler by increasing the red and yellow color channels by adjusting the "Color Tone." Press the "set" button on "Color Tone" and toggle the dial to the right to add yellow, or to the left of center to add red.

Press the "WB" (white balance) button on the top right side of the camera to select lighting conditions, ensuring even better skin tones under various types of light. The "WB" button is the second button to the right of the camera's hot shoe.

    • 7

Use the large, rear command dial to scroll through the pre-set lighting options and stop on the most appropriate option for your shooting conditions including auto, daylight, cloudy, shade, fluorescent and tungsten. Advanced options including custom, flash and Kelvin scale settings are also available.
