You will need to select WPA or WEP encryption when setting up your new secure wireless network.

Wireless Internet provides freedom of use and an open Internet connection for multiple users on different computers. However, bandwidth can sometimes be stolen by unauthorized users, which can be avoided with a secure wireless Internet network. With a broadband modem, a wireless router and an Ethernet cable, you can set up such a secure wireless network for your home or office even if you have no experience with network installation or high-speed Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your broadband modem from the wall or surge protector it is plugged into.

    • 2

Plug your Ethernet cable into the open Ethernet port on the back of your new wireless router. This exact port's identification will vary depending on the kind of wireless router you have. The Ethernet cable will either plug into the WAN, WLAN or Internet port.

    • 3

Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into the back of the broadband modem via the Ethernet cable port. Plug the broadband modem's power cord back into the power source and turn it on. Give it a minute to boot up, detect its settings, and realize it is being fed into your new wireless router. If there is an unexpected error in the boot-up process, simply hit the "Reset" button on the top or back of your modem and start the process anew.

Find the unique URL and default password in the router's manual. This URL allows you to set up password protection for your wireless network. Open your Internet browser on a computer in your house or office that is still running on your old wired Internet connection. Type in the URL, then type in the default password from the router's manual.

    • 5

Select an SSID for your wireless network. The SSID is simply the name you choose for your secure wireless network. Choose an encryption level when prompted. This will allow you to set the security for your wireless network. Either WPA or WEP encryption will work fine, depending on what your wireless router offers.

    • 6

Click "Apply" to save all your settings.

    • 7

Right-click on the network icon on the right side of the bottom toolbar of your computer's desktop if you are using Windows. In Mac, click the network icon on the right side of the top toolbar. This will bring up a list of available wireless networks. Select your newly created network's name and type in the password you chose. You will now be connected to your secure wireless network.
